Nigeria Unveils Major Green Jobs Push as NCCC, ILO and France Launch New Climate Transition Phase

Nigeria has taken another significant step toward an inclusive green economy with the official launch of Phase II of the Social Dimension of Ecological Transition Project, bringing together key government leaders and international partners to drive climate action that delivers real benefits for people. The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Dr. (Mrs.) Nkiruka Maduekwe, joined the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi; the Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Dr. Vanessa Phala-Moyo; the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Kamil A. Shoretire; representatives of the French Government, and other stakeholders at the launch held at the United Nations House. In her keynote address, the DG called for a shift from climate policies on paper to people-centred action, stressing that the true measure of success lies in implementation at the grassroots. Drawing on the outcomes of UNFCCC SB64, she reaffirmed the NCCC’s commitment to deepening collaboration with the ILO and the Government of France through 2029 in support of the Renewed Hope Agenda and Nigeria’s inclusive green growth ambitions. The new phase of the project will drive the implementation of Nigeria’s Just Transition Guidelines and Action Plan (JT-GAP), strengthen clean energy value chains, promote economic diversification, and create more opportunities for workers, women, youth, and persons with disabilities, while accelerating the country’s NDC 3.0 commitments. With this renewed partnership, Nigeria is moving beyond policy discussions to practical action aimed at ensuring the ecological transition creates jobs, expands opportunities, and leaves no one behind.
